From April 1st to 18th, 1999, the Germany exhibition tour "Stars on Ice" was
again touring through Germany.
At twelve stops, among them Berlin, Chemnitz and Frankfurt/Main, the audience
had the opportunity to enjoy a show with such great skaters like Lucinda Ruh,
Alexei Urmanov and Alexander Abt.
The "Stars on Ice" dance
group with Jennifer Brett, Anke Denzau, Saeyan Lee, Jyrina Lorenz, Bianca Sonntag and Jana
Wagner accompanied Lucinda Ruh to a special dance number to
"Hijo de la Luna" featuring her famouse incredible spins. In the second part of the show Lucinda showed
additionally her 1998/99 short program to "Lawrence of Arabia".
One of the night's highlights were Vladimir Bessedin and Alexei Polishchuk. The Ukrainians are great ice acrobats known to the German audience already
from their appearance at the 1998 ARD Christmas ice show in Oberstdorf - for example. They presented very risky and breathtaking programs
to circus music and the Pulp Fiction soundtrack.
Denise
Biellmann from Switzerland joined the tour in Frankfurt and Regensburg only. The 1981 World Champion and 13 times professional
champion skated to "Bailando" by Loona.
All 1999 German
National Champions took part at the tour. The 17 years old Eva-Maria
Fitze from Munich could beat Tanja Szewczenko at this year's German National
Championships in Oberstdorf and won her second National title. At the exhibition she skated to "Cup of
Life" by Ricky Martin and "La Monture". Andrejs
Vlascenko could not make his dream of a European or World Championships medal come
true this year. Both times he had trouble to skate clean programs and
could not match the high technical standard set by the Russian skaters. In the meantime he changed his training town from
Stuttgart to Füssen where he wants to prepare for the next skating season. At the 1999 tour he presented his
new exhibition program "Tu vas me detruire" from Notre Dame de Paris.
His elegance and expressiveness in combination with his high jumps make him to
one of the World's top skaters. Peggy Schwarz
and Mirko Müller, the German pairs skating couple from Berlin, had a black year this
skating season. Suffering a lack of training time due to an injury at
the end of 1998 and missing the NHK Trophy therefore their bad luck continued at the
European and World Championships. They took up the subject
"violence against women" as a new and very serious subject for their free skate
this year skating to the soundtrack from "Broken Arrow". Peggy Schwarz and Mirko Müller skated their second
exhibition program to "Strong enough" by Cher.
Elena
Leonova and Andrej Khvalko from Russia remained unknown as eligible skaters. After joining their forces in 1995 their skating
career made a turn when they won the US Open in 1997. Elena and Andrej are known for their great acrobatic
lifts as you can see at the photos.
Susanna
Rahkamo and Petri Kokko the 1995 European Champions pleased the audience once again
with two wonderful programs. The Finish ice dancers skated to the soundtrack of
"Titanic" very emotional showing difficult lifts and elements. The exhibition
dance already begins with a highlight when Petri "stops" Susanna from
"jumping into the sea". Their second dance was to "Hijo de la Luna"
sung by Montserrat Caballe.
Alexei Urmanov, 1994 Olympic
Champion, and Alexander Abt, 1998
European Bronze medallist, were the darlings of the audience - especially of the girls
;-). Alexei who returned this season to the skating circle
after suffering a long lasting groin injury skated to "Toccata and Fuge" by J.
S. Bach played by Vanessa Mae and to a part of this year's free skate. More photos of Alexei
and Alexander can be
found
at their official home pages.
The 1997 World Champions Mandy Wötzel and Ingo Steuer joined once again the Germany
"Stars on Ice" tour to keep in contact with their home audience. After turning professional in 1998 they are in much
demand for skating shows mostly at the United States and Canada.
René Lohse and Kati Winkler, the 1999 German National Champions and
students of Martin Skotnicky, presented two new show dances they learned just
before the tour. They skated to "Vivo per
lei" by Andrea Boccelli who is also well known for his duet with Sarah Brightman to
"Time To Say Good Bye". As second music they choosed "Oh Sandy"
from the musical Grease. More photos of Kati and René can be found in the photo gallery of
their official homepage.
